Denmark’s track and field team has been making waves, putting athletes on the podium constantly this season. Following another successful day at the Rust Buster Meet at West Forsyth last week, the team hit the road again this Wednesday to compete in the 7A Regional Meet. The throwing teams did exceptionally well, placing a Dane in the top ten of both boys and girls discus, as well as boys shot put.
Cameron Phillips, who competes in girls discus, made her mark by placing 8th in the finals with a throw of 90.5 meters. That is a personal record for Phillips! In just her first year of high school level throwing, she is nearing the school record of 96.3 meters, solidifying herself as someone to keep an eye on as she gains experience and power.
Credit must be given to the guidance Coach Corley offers his athletes. Cameron revealed that Corley places focus on situational awareness. At practices, he will often challenge the team to think strategically by presenting a situation and a goal to reach so that the throwers are more comfortable when choosing what type of throw they want to attempt to get the best results. Corely also makes sure to incorporate stretching at the end of practice to ensure the team’s bodies are healthy, as throwing is a physically demanding sport.
Next on the itinerary for the Danes is the Sectional meet. Good luck to those who are beginning their final preparations to show out for the last time this season.
