Colors of the Wind: Color Guard in Season

Bright-colored flags flutter in the wind adding beauty and uniqueness to passionate performances by the band. Color guard is a team of performers who express messages through dances and routines. They combine props with strong movements to emphasize a theme of perseverance. Preparation for performances includes practices starting in July focusing on fundamentals, muscle memory, and technique. Color guard performs alongside the band at football games in addition to marching band competitions. At competitions, the guard adds to the overall score of the band, including visual effects and general effect.

Perseverance is a common theme the color guard community uses. Izzy Cero is a sophomore who participates in color guard and she states that people join color guard to express a sense of inner self and to be included in an accepting community that focuses on determination and overcoming obstacles. As the guard works in the scorching sun of July through the chilly winter of January, they focus on building bonds to accurately represent a theme of perseverance. They persevere through strenuous practices which are demonstrated in the beautiful shows they put on. Lily Williamson, sophomore, is a color guard member and explains how color guard has impacted her life, “It has connected me with an awesome team who has shown me to continue on even when the task at hand seems too difficult.” As the color guard girls learn how to persist through difficulties, they inspire others to do the same through the intricate movements they perform.
